Sonihull Looking Forward to SMM 2022
SMM 2022 will probably go down as the most important show ever for the maritime sector. After two years of unprecedented upheaval and challenges, Trade and Technology will come together in Hamburg in September, for the first time since 2018, to exchange ideas and work in unison to safeguard the future of global economies and ecosystems.
“The 30th edition of SMM has the tagline ‘driving the maritime transition’,” explains Sonihull CEO Darren Rowlands. “ We have always seen Sonihull as a major piece of the puzzle in helping to modernise the global merchant fleet. Sonihull’s ultrasonic antifouling technology will be at the forefront of this maritime transition. Lowering CO2 emissions, improving propeller performance, increasing fuel efficiency, lowering operating costs and helping companies to outperform a new era of environmental goals.”
The market has yet to settle on the best way forward for future fuels and hybrid power, but one thing is a certainty. Regardless of the power source, ships will still have propellers and they can have the largest single impact on fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions.
Darren Rowlands – Sonihull – CEO
In a period dominated by strategies to become carbon neutral, Sonihull has become a green technology leader capable of delivering real-world results that can make real environmental changes.
In propeller applications alone, Sonihull will keep props clean between dry docking and can eliminate the need for specialist underwater polishing, targeting over 30% of a vessel’s overall fuel efficiency. If Sonihull was fitted to every commercial ship tomorrow, global CO2 emissions would be cut by over 160 million tonnes per year.
“Sonihull is proud to fight to create healthy oceans every day by providing environmentally – friendly antifouling solutions to help global maritime industries reduce their carbon footprints and clean up their operations,” added Rowlands. “The market has yet to settle on the best way forward for future fuels and hybrid power, but one thing is a certainty. Regardless of the power source, ships will still have propellers and they can have the largest single impact on fuel efficiency and exhaust emissions.”
Sonihull systems can also be used to protect box coolers and RSW pipework from infestation, allowing owners to re-activate vessels following extended lay-up without the need to wait for expensive cleaning work in drydock. “Our ultrasonic technology provides very cost-effective protection for box coolers, we can cut installation and lifecycle costs by up to 95% compared to Impressed Current Anti Fouling (ICAF) systems.”

Sonihull’s mission is to deliver environmentally safe, cost effective antifouling wherever unwanted bio-fouling persists. Our vision is:
To make dosing the oceans with poisonous biocides and microplastics a thing of the past
To deliver effective antifouling systems using the power of ultrasound
To save the oceans, one ship at a time
